![]() The idea is to move away from simply lecturing the students and relying on rote memorization by instead focusing on the merits of a captivating lesson that discusses concepts and promotes understanding of material. The educational goals of this instructional module are to provide geometric visualization software program that provides students access to experiment and explore basic and complex theorems in the field of geometry. There are many math-centered technology resources that can be utilized within the classroom such as, Cinderella and Cabri, but I preferred the user-friendliness of Geometers sketchpad personally (Burgiel).įurthermore, educators have the freedom to decide the degree of difficulty when working with Geometers Sketchpad and how the students will use the software to interact in the lesson. Sketchpad can be used to demonstrate fundamental concepts across elementary mathematics, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and beyond (Moyer). I chose to represent a myriad of mathematical topics and concepts within the presentation to show just how versatile SketchPad software is. As well As provide visuals for basic shapes and the relationships between them. For example, Geometers sketchpad can show “jumps on a number line”. Geometer’s sketchpad has the ability to be used in not only secondary math but elementary math as well. Students and teacher can interact with the program to become part of the lesson. I have no prior experience with SketchPad, but I found that it was extremely easy to use, from not only a teaching perspective but also a learner’s perspective as well. ![]() With each passing year more technological advances in personal electronic devices, such as cell phones, laptops and calculators, are increasing the level in which pupils learn and develop their basic mathematics skills (moyer). I expect the role of technology in the professional life of teaching in mathematics will constantly advance and expand. If your school already has the software available on computers then I would highly recommend using this software. The downfall of this program is that you are required to purchase it in order to access it. Its ease of availability to both students and teachers is the reason this software program is widely used (Key curriculum). It has shown me that it is a great opportunity to have each and every student interact in the classroom. My personal experience with SketchPad was in the context of high school mathematics instruction. I have researched several, and since I am currently in a geometry class, I chose to focus on Geometer’s sketchpad. This is where the need for Math-Centered technology programs arose from. Many universal technology applications/software programs are not equipped with the right tools needed in the math classroom world (Sinclair). There is always some really great idea, such as the use of google slides in the class, but when it comes to mathematical application, somehow we run into several bumps that make the use of the technology quite a hassle. I found it extremely difficult to make technology work in the classroom. Math-Centered Technology in the ClassroomĪs I began to enter the real teaching world, the first struggle I faced was with technology.
